Selecting the correct flange is critical for safe, leak-free operation in
pipelines and industrial systems. A flange connects pipes, valves, pumps, and
other equipment, forming a mechanical joint that can be assembled and
disassembled easily. The choice depends on pressure rating, temperature, media
compatibility, and method of connection. Common types include weld neck,
slip-on, blind, threaded, and socket weld, each offering distinct advantages in
different scenarios.
Pressure-temperature rating is the starting point. Flanges are classified
by standards such as ASME B16.5 or EN 1092, with classes (e.g., 150, 300, 600)
defining maximum allowable pressure at given temperatures. Matching the flange
class to system operating conditions ensures it will not fail under load. Media
compatibility is equally vital—corrosive fluids may require stainless steel or
special alloys, while high-temperature steam demands materials with stable creep
resistance.
Connection method influences both installation and performance. Weld neck
flanges provide strong, fatigue-resistant joints for high-pressure systems but
require precise beveling and skilled welding. Slip-on flanges are easier to
align and weld, suitable for lower pressures. Threaded flanges allow assembly
without welding, ideal for small-bore lines or hazardous areas where hot work is
restricted. Socket welds prevent turbulence in small pipelines. Blind flanges
seal off pipe ends for maintenance or future expansion.
Face type and sealing are final considerations. Raised face (RF), flat face
(FF), and ring-type joint (RTJ) faces match corresponding gasket types to
achieve reliable sealing. Gasket material must resist the process fluid and
temperature. Proper bolting procedures and flange alignment prevent leaks and
uneven stress. By systematically evaluating pressure, temperature, media,
connection, and sealing needs, engineers can select the flange that guarantees
integrity and efficiency in industrial applications.
