  In industrial process control—from oil refineries to pharmaceutical plants—the reliability of differential pressure flow meters hinges on exact orifice flange dimensions. These specialized flanges, bolted between pipe sections, house a calibrated orifice plate that creates a pressure drop proportional to flow rate, enabling precise monitoring of liquids, gases, or steam.

  Standard orifice flange dimensions follow ASME B16.36 or ISO 5167, specifying bore diameter, flange thickness, pressure tap locations (corner, flange, or D&D taps), and bolt circle patterns. For example, a 6-inch Class 150 orifice flange typically has an outer diameter of 11.0 inches, 12 bolt holes of 0.75 inches, and a raised face height of 0.06 inches—tolerances held to ±0.005 inches for accuracy.

  Material selection aligns with media compatibility. Carbon steel suffices for water or air; stainless steel (316L) handles corrosive chemicals; Monel or Hastelloy serves in high-temperature, high-pressure hydrocarbon services. The orifice plate itself is often stainless, with sharp-edged upstream bores machined to micron-level precision.

  Installation errors are a leading cause of measurement drift. Misalignment, gasket intrusion into the bore, or incorrect tap orientation can introduce errors exceeding 5%. Best practice includes using alignment pins, verifying concentricity with dial indicators, and ensuring straight pipe runs (10D upstream, 5D downstream) for stable flow profiles.

  Calibration and certification are mandatory in custody transfer applications. Each orifice flange assembly receives a unique tag number, with documentation tracing plate diameter, beta ratio (d/D), and Reynolds number range. Periodic revalidation ensures compliance with fiscal or safety regulations.
