Ring Type Joint Orifice Flange: The Pinnacle of Flange Technology

Release time:2026-02-12    Click:10

In high-pressure, high-temperature industrial systems, flange connections must deliver leak-proof reliability and structural integrity, and the ring type joint (RTJ) orifice flange stands as the apex of such engineering. Designed for critical applications in oil and gas, petrochemical, and power generation, this flange integrates a metal ring gasket with a precision-machined groove to create a seal that withstands extreme pressures (up to 15,000 psi) and temperatures (-46°C to 500°C). Its uncompromising performance makes it indispensable for ensuring safety and efficiency in volatile environments.

Mechanical design is centered on the RTJ gasket. Typically made from soft iron, stainless steel, or Inconel, the ring gasket features a oval, octagonal, or RX cross-section, matching the flange’s groove to form a metal-to-metal seal. Under compression, the gasket deforms plastically to fill microscopic irregularities, eliminating leakage paths. This seal remains intact even under thermal cycling, where repeated heating and cooling could loosen conventional gaskets, making RTJ flanges ideal for steam lines, wellheads, and reactor vessels.

Material compatibility ensures longevity. Flanges are forged from carbon steel, alloy steel, or stainless steel, selected for their tensile strength and corrosion resistance in process fluids. For sour gas applications, super duplex stainless steels resist hydrogen sulfide stress corrosion cracking, while nickel alloys excel in high-temperature chlorine environments. The precise machining of the groove—with tolerances as tight as ±0.05 mm—ensures uniform gasket compression, preventing over-tightening or leaks.

Orifice integration adds functional sophistication. The flange incorporates a machined orifice plate holder, allowing for accurate flow measurement of liquids, gases, or steam. This eliminates the need for separate piping taps, reducing pressure drop and installation complexity. In custody transfer applications, where measurement accuracy is legally mandated, RTJ orifice flanges provide the reliability required to meet API MPMS Chapter 14.3 or ISO 5167 standards.

Installation and maintenance demand expertise. Proper bolt torque sequencing and gasket alignment are critical—uneven compression can damage the ring gasket or flange face. Technicians use hydraulic torque wrenches to apply precise loads, and lubricant-coated bolts prevent galling. Periodic inspections with ultrasonic testing or dye penetrant ensure early detection of flaws, minimizing downtime. Despite their complexity, RTJ flanges have a service life of 20–30 years with correct upkeep.

RTJ orifice flanges embody the pinnacle of flange technology, merging precision engineering with robust performance. By providing leak-free, high-integrity connections in the harshest conditions, they safeguard industrial processes, protect personnel, and uphold the integrity of critical infrastructure.
