Measuring Flow Precisely with an Orifice Flange Union

  In the precise world of industrial process control and custody transfer of fluids, accurately measuring flow rate is paramount. An orifice flange union is a specialized, standardized assembly designed to house an orifice plate—a thin plate with a precisely machined central hole—which is the primary element for creating a differential pressure used to calculate flow. This engineered package allows for safe, reliable, and repeatable flow measurement in pipelines carrying liquids, gases, or steam.

  The assembly consists of a pair of flanges, jack-screws, bolts, gaskets, and the orifice plate itself. The two flanges have matching raised faces and grooves to hold the plate and sealing gaskets. The jack-screws facilitate the separation of the flanges for inspection or replacement of the orifice plate without needing to spread the entire pipeline. This design is critical for maintenance, as it minimizes downtime and disruption in continuous process operations like those in oil and gas, chemical, and power generation plants.

  The principle of operation is based on Bernoulli's equation. As fluid passes through the restricted orifice, its velocity increases, causing a measurable pressure drop from the upstream side to the downstream side. Pressure tap holes drilled into the flanges (or sometimes into the pipe itself) allow instruments to sense this differential pressure. This DP value, along with known fluid properties and pipe dimensions, is used to calculate the volumetric or mass flow rate with high accuracy.

  Installation and orientation are critical for accurate measurement. The orifice flange union must be installed in a straight run of pipe, with sufficient upstream and downstream straight lengths (as per standards like ISO 5167 or ASME MFC-3M) to ensure a fully developed, non-turbulent flow profile before it reaches the plate. The plate must be centered perfectly, and the gaskets must not intrude into the pipe bore. Proper bolt torque is essential to prevent leaks and ensure even gasket compression.

  Orifice plates come in different types—concentric, eccentric, or segmental—for clean, dirty, or wet gas services. The flange unions are rated for specific pressure classes (e.g., ANSI 150, 300, 600) to match the pipeline's operating pressure. For corrosive services, the flanges, plates, and bolts may be made from stainless steel or other alloys. Regular maintenance involves checking for plate erosion, gasket integrity, and ensuring pressure taps are not blocked.

  The orifice flange union remains a cornerstone of industrial flow measurement due to its simplicity, robustness, and lack of moving parts. It provides a cost-effective and highly reliable method for continuous monitoring. By specifying the correct assembly materials, pressure rating, and plate bore size for the application, engineers ensure precise and trustworthy flow data, which is essential for process optimization, billing, and safety across countless industrial facilities worldwide.
